Donald Trump is an American businessman and politician who serves as the 47th president of the United States. He was also the 45th president, from 2017 to 2021. He was born in 1946 in Queens, New York. He is only the second person in U.S. history to win the presidency, lose a re-election, and then win again. The first was Grover Cleveland, more than 130 years ago.

Trump grew up in New York City. His father, Fred Trump, was a wealthy real estate developer. After college, Donald joined the family business and later took it over. He built hotels, golf courses, and tall buildings, including Trump Tower in Manhattan. He put his name on most of his buildings in large gold letters. He also became famous on television. From 2004 to 2015, he hosted a reality show called The Apprentice, where contestants competed for a job in his company.

Trump had never held a government job before running for president. In 2016, he won the Republican nomination and then defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in the general election. As president, he cut taxes, appointed three Supreme Court justices, and tightened rules on immigration at the southern border. He shared his thoughts directly with the public on social media, often many times a day. That was new for a president.

His time in office was full of conflict. He was impeached twice by the House of Representatives, more than any other president. The Senate did not remove him from office either time. In 2020, he lost his re-election to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump claimed the election was stolen. Courts and election officials, including many Republicans, said it was not. On January 6, 2021, a crowd of his supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol. They were trying to stop Congress from confirming Biden's win.

Trump ran again in 2024 and won, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Earlier that year, he had become the first former U.S. president ever convicted of a crime. The case was in New York, and it was about business records. He denied wrongdoing and appealed. In July 2024, he survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He returned to the White House in January 2025.

Few political figures in modern American history have been as loved or as hated. Supporters see him as a strong outsider who shook up Washington and put America first. Critics see him as a threat to democracy and the rule of law. Historians will write about his presidency for a long time. Americans are still arguing about what it all means.
